On the road again, I just can’t wait to get on the road again…On the road again, Goin’ places that I’ve never been, Seein’ things that I may never see again, And I can’t wait to get on the road again – excerpt from Willie Nelson’s song
It’s been a long 13 days since we’ve been back home and are working on readjusting to our routine. School starts in a few weeks so we are soaking up the last bits of summer while we can. Many people are ready to be home after being away and while I do love our house, I was itching to get away almost as soon as we returned. It isn’t that I don’t love our home, because I most certainly do, but it’s that I love the laid back and relaxing pace that comes with camping.
So this weekend we were back on the road again. It wasn’t a long trip and it wasn’t to somewhere new but to a tried and true location close to home. At least a couple of times a year we camp at a nearby park/campground. It isn’t fancy, but has a petting zoo, bike ramps, trails, a lake and two playgrounds. The kids love it. We love that it is close (aka low key planning and packing).
Last year we hosted each of the boys birthday parties at our campsite and since it worked out so well we did it again this year. All the kids bring their bikes, visit the animals, take turns on the bike ramps and most importantly run, laugh and play together. The adults enjoy visiting around the campfire. It’s a fun way to spend the evening and is low prep…win win!
Not only is the campsite tried and true but the birthday menu is as well. If there is one thing our family can all agree on at meal time it’s tacos! Whether we make them at home or stop by one of the many local Mexican restaurants, we all are satisfied. For a couple of years now, we’ve had a taco bar for our birthday camping adventure. It’s a great way to feed a crowd and easy to fix since most of the toppings don’t require prep. Leftovers are great for lunch the next day or even to spice up scrambled eggs.
Camping has resulted in so many memories for us and includes countless hours with our friends and family. Even though we can’t take 16 day trips on a regular basis, we find just as much enjoyment in our weekend trips and seek opportunities for these adventures as often as we can.
